Alex, Royal Oak High School Class of 2019 https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2018/9/alex-royal-oak-high-school-class-of-2019 Alex is a HUGE Detroit sports fan, so when he wanted to head out to Comerica Park, Little Ceasars Arena and Ford Field for his senior pictures, I thought it was a great idea! We had a great time touring Downtown Detroit, and I think these photos really show off his LOVE of Detroit, and Detroit Sports!

It's a family affair... https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2018/8/its-a-family-affair About a year ago, my daughter who loves Broadway so much it usually irritates the people around her (lol) got a package from a friend at school, who told her it was from another of their friend's named Tommy. Tommy knew that Charlotte loves Broadway (because we ALL know Charlotte loves Broadway) and had a Playbill for a play from NYC, so he passed it onto her. Oh My Gosh she was almost in tears.

Flash Forward to about a month ago. Tommy's mother reached out on The Facebook to get family photos. Tommy's older brother George is going away to College, and mom wanted pictures before he left. Needless to say, I was SUPER excited to meet this young man.

We met at a small park in Royal Oak for their family photos, right at the end of the day when the sun is just about perfection. Turns out, the whole family was absolutely adorable! Congrats to George on your Freshman year of college, and Congrats to Mom for raising two amazing boys!

THANK YOU to the G family for thinking of me to make some memories for them!

Rose and Brandon Sitting in a Tree https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2018/7/rose-and-brandon-sitting-in-a-tree I met Rose in the photo lab at OCC in Royal Oak, Michigan. She was in a black and white printing class, and I was just signed up for class to have access to the photo labs. I am telling you, that place is pure Zen. ANYWAY, as you can imagine, it was quite an honor when she asked me to photograph her wedding!

Rose and Brandon wanted their photos taken on Belle Isle, in Detroit. Which is great because I love that place too! So we met near the James Scott Memorial Fountain, and got some really great photos of them both.

Isaac and Beth https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2018/6/isaac-and-beth I had such fun photographing Isaac and Beth's wedding. First of all, let me just share that I was lucky enough to photograph Isaac's father's wedding in 2013, Beth's sister's wedding (as a Mike Staff Productions photographer) in 2017, and now Isaac and Beth's wedding. I am absolutely honored that I have been able to create so many memories for this wonderful family.

Beth and Isaac got married on June 16th, 2018, at the Central United Methodist Church on Woodward in Detroit. This is the church they belong to. They also belong to the choir, and a couple of the groomsmen had dual roles as groomsmen and choir participants. It was awesome to watch.

AmyClaeysPhotography-2 AmyClaeysPhotography-2 AmyClaeysPhotography-2 AmyClaeysPhotography-2 AmyClaeysPhotography-6AmyClaeysPhotography-6 Every wedding day has that Moment. Well. That moment for Isaac and Beth came when it was time for the rings. Isaac's brother Jeremiah was the Best Man. Poor Jeremiah was confused about why there was more than one ring for Beth, and ended up only bringing the one. As you can see by the photos, Beth noticed immediately, at which point Jeremiah left to go get the other ring. The first thing Rev. Jeff Nelson said once Jeremiah had gone was, "so, anything new happening?" LOL. This guy was great. After a bit, a very helpful guest came up to the front and offered another "for now" ring to the lovely couple. Luckily, Jeremiah came back within just a minute or two after that, and the ceremony continued.

AmyClaeysPhotography-7AmyClaeysPhotography-7 Look at the JOY on those faces.

AmyClaeysPhotography-8AmyClaeysPhotography-8 The United Methodist Church is situated RIGHT in front of Comerica Park. Isaac and Beth are big Detroit Tiger's fans, so we naturally walked over to the park for some pics.

The first picture you see is a full frame film picture. (the glare at the top was from taking a iPhone pic of it for the blog... grr) This 16x20 black and white film print shows off the full negative. It was taken, developed, and finally printed by me, by hand, custom for Isaac an Beth's wedding.

Beth and Isaac finished out their day at the Jaycee Park on Long Lake in Troy, MI. They entered under a beautiful flowered entryway that Beth's parents made just for her for their big day. AmyClaeysPhotography-10AmyClaeysPhotography-10

Finally, one of my favorite things at a wedding is to gather several generations of the ladies, and take a beautiful picture of their hands. I did this for Beth's sister Kendra's wedding with Kendra, her mom, and grandmother, and just knew I'd have to do it again for Beth's wedding, recreating it but with Beth this time.

All in all, it was a FANTASTIC day filled with so very much Joy and Love. Congratulations to Beth and Isaac. I raise a glass to you both. Here is to a lifetime of love, laughter and happiness.

PS - Here is Beth and Isaac waaaaaayyyyy back in 2013 at Carter and Andrea's 2013 wedding!

It's pretty great when one of the car guys asks you to photograph his senior daughter WITH his car. it's the best of both worlds!

A Hole In One https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2016/6/a-hole-in-one "I'm going to break your camera."

"I already don't like you."

"I hate this already"

"Do I really have to do this?"

"I have two bad sides.."

These are all things I've heard before I do someone's headshots. I'll take the photos, oh I don't know, 10 or 20 or 30 photos, all while talking to whoever is in front of me. Why am I talking to them? To relax them. To get their normal, relaxed, happy face on the camera. Sometimes after taking these first photos, I show them on the computer, and we start all over.

A headshot is supposed to tell the world who you are. And you are NOT that person with a frozen, toothy, fake smile on your face. I promise.

So, we chat. Married? Got kids? How about grand kids? What do you do for for fun? Sometimes we talk about shoes or purses.. everyone is different. Everyone has a trigger that will make them not only smile, but make their eyes shine and their face flush a tiny bit.

That's my job. To find you. To photograph you.

Today I got lucky. Today I took a photo of an adorable girl here in my new office, at my new day job. I work now for The Miller Team Realtors, in Northville. Anyway, Rachel was actually excited to do this. So I set up my Set, and we have a Great big, well windowed room here at the office, and I decided that the light was juuuuust right to try to do a north facing, natural light headshot.

I set it all up on my camera.

I went and got Rachel and told her I was ready.

We went to the Set, I told her where to stand, and in a flash of FUN and Sass, she "struck a pose" for me. I don't know how else to describe it.

I took the photo. Of course.

I looked at the camera, and thought "damn.. that's really great..."

I show her, and she says "perfect".

So, instead of 20 photos, talking about fun or inappropriate things with my subject.. I took ONE photo. And it was a winner. A hole in one.

Right on.

Jason and Stephen's Wedding (& Anne and Mike's 45th Wedding Anniversary) https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2016/2/jason-and-stephens-wedding-anne-and-mike-s-45th-wedding-anniversary The first time I went to Jason and Stephen's wedding, I was a new mom and had only just gotten my first digital camera. It was a long, long time ago. Since then many, many things have changed.

I will share a story with you. The day SCOTUS came down with their ruling on gay marriage, Stephen went straight to the florist and got a dozen roses. He drove immediately to Changez Salon, where Jason was working, and proposed... again. Honest to God, as I type this my eyes are welling up.

Now, J and Steph could have run straight to the courthouse to make things LEGAL, but they didn't. Instead they had a chat with Jason's parents, Anne and Mike, and opted to share their day. Jason and Stephen said their LEGAL wedding vows, and Anne and Mike renewed their wedding vows on Anne and Mike's 45th wedding anniversary. The exact day in fact.

To top off this amazing evening, the Eisenhower Dance company performed to help celebrate this union.

Love Wins.

So I was interviewed for a internet radio station.. and you can listen to it! https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/11/so-i-was-interviewed-for-a-internet-radio-station-and-you-can-listen-to-it So I did a senior session with this cutie back in September

Amy Claeys Photography Daniel Class of 2016

Well, this wonderful woman, Kim B. Smith saw the photos because she is friends with Daniel's mom, and called me to set up her own shoot, only these would be business headshots, but you know, out and about.

I offered her hair and makeup at her home as part of the package, and of course she said a resounding YES. So I called Evie Selaty who was available that day, and Evie went out to Kim's house and did her hair and makeup in the comfort of her own home. I showed up near the end of Hair and Makeup to get a couple of shots of getting ready pics. Kim was adamant that she would NOT be enjoying the day. She was insistent that we were NOT going to be friends, that she was going to be incredibly difficult to get any good photos of.

Yeah right .

Kim-14 - Sm. File for sharing onlineKim-14 - Sm. File for sharing online

Kim finished our shoot and was laughing, and felt GREAT, and kept saying how much FUN she had. Which, really, is the goal, right? She even drug me over to a Birmingham restaurant where her niece worked so that I could meet her. Kim LOVED the day, and she loved her pictures.

Kim created her own radio station Bold Radio Station, she speaks publicly and consults. She teaches women how to sell like a woman and achieve the success they are after, by being BOLD.

Kim was SO excited about her whole session, from the makeup to the photo delivery that she asked Evie and I to be guests on her radio show. We talked all about how we started out, where we are going, and what we are doing now. It was a great experience, and I would like to invite you all to listen to the show. It's pretty great, if I do say so myself.

Halloween 2015 https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/10/halloween-2015 One of my favorite things in the whole world is watching my kids be creative. This month, they both worked their tushes off to make their Halloween costumes pretty much from scratch, and I not only loved watching them do that, I love that I'm in a position to take really great photos of the end results!

Special note to say a loud and cheerful THANK YOU to my friend Michele, who helped Charlotte with the shopping and the sewing of her most amazing costume.

She has been coming out to photo walks for years with us. When her daughter Becca got engaged, Francine honored me by asking me to photograph her daughter's wedding. Thank you so much Francine! Your faith in me means the absolute world to me!

Becca and Josh tied the knot at Paradise Acres Gypsy Ranch in Holly Michigan. They said their vows on a hill over looking a gorgeous lake, and the evening finished up with boots stompin' in the barn. It was a really fun, laid back wedding, and I had a great time photographing it! Thanks so much for letting me be a small part of your big day!

John Norman at the Northville Winery https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/8/john-norman-at-the-northville-winery I've known John since we rode the bus together to school. We both lived in the middle of nowhere, so we were always some of the first picked up, and the last dropped off. Since our illustrious school days, John has moved to New York, and has become a performer, and we are lucky enough that about once a year he comes home and plays for his family and friends.

This year, he played at the Northville Winery - which by the way was fantastic - go there, drink their wine, you will not be disappointed. I was able to go this year, so I did, and I brought my camera. It was a good show - all folksy and mellow. Enjoy the photos.

They were a bit nervous about the whole thing, but we headed down to Belle Isle, and had a really fun afternoon before heading down to Greektown to finish off the evening with some fabulous night lights.

I will never forget the first time I met Jordan, it was at my uncle's house, and it was one of the last times that my husband Chuck came out to a gathering during his illness. To say he didn't look good would be an understatement. But Jordan came inside where we were, and said "You must be Amy! I'm so glad to meet you!!" and then sat with us and visited with us both for the rest of the time that we were there. It was an incredibly kind and thoughtful thing to do. That's just how Jordan is. She is kind, and happy, and fun and funny. I am so happy that my brother found such a wonderful lady, and I'm so happy that she found Steve. They are both amazing people, and I couldn't be happier for them both!

Here's to the beginning of a long, fun and happy life to two of the most amazing people I know.

Brian and Mary https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/7/brian-and-mary Amy Claeys Photography Mary and Brian's Wedding at Freedom Hill, Michigan

Once upon a time there was a lady who ran a photo group, her name was Amy. She would often invite photographers from all the land to come out and take photos while walking, she called this a Photowalk. At one such photowalk, a newer photographer that she had recently become close with, a nice photographer named Mary, joined the group. A nice man that had recently had a big change in his own life, named Brian also joined this photowalk.

After the photowalk, Amy invited everyone to break bread and drink ale at a club near their walk. Only Mary and Brian opted to join Amy for a drink and a meal. Amy and Brian arrived fairly quickly, but Mary became lost in the forest (we'll call the forest Greektown from now on), and Brian, ever gallant, left to find Mary in the deep wood (aka, the streets of Greektown). Amy waited for about 5 minutes alone, drinking her ale patiently while she waited before Mary arrived. Amy and Mary tried to reach Brian to let him know of Mary's safe arrival, to no avail.

Eventually, Brian came back. He was instantly heartened to see that Mary had arrived safely.

All three chatted the evening away, but Amy saw the stolen looks between the two new friends almost immediatly! Amy may be making this part up, but it really does add a lot to the story, yes?

Several weeks later, Brian hosted a photo walk to Autorama at Cobo in Detroit, "what better way to get to see Mary again!" he thought. Not surprisingly, Mary signed up for Brian's photowalk almost immediatly. Luckily, no one else signed up, so Mary and Brian were able to spend a long day fluttering eyelashes and sneaking looks at each other where no one (they knew) could see. It is said that there was spontaneous singing and dancing as well, though that last part is unconfirmed.

Love was in the air.

Before long, Mary and Brian were spending almost all of their time together, and eventually, Brian asked Mary to be his beautiful wife, and as I'm sure you are not surprised, she said yes.

Their wedding was a beautiful affair, filled with love, surrounded by friends and family, who all ate their fill, toasted the bride and groom again and again, and danced, it is said, so much that the soles of many shoes were worn by the evening's end.

And they lived HAPPILY ever after.

Congratulations Mary and Brian. I am SO honored to have been able to watch your love spark, and turn eventually to flame.

Love Wins!!! https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/6/love-wins LGBT Sparkler WeddingLGBT Sparkler Wedding I won't lie, I've been positively dancing since Friday's SCOTUS judgement! And I would like to take a moment right now, and say to everyone in the LGBT community

CONGRATULATIONS!!

As Friday went on, I thought about what I could do, what I could say, and decided to put an ad in Between the Lines to say just what I said above to the whole LGBT community in Detroit. So I wrote a note to all my friends looking for an LGBT couple to model for me. Right away Becky and Kim jumped on board, and not too long after that Blumz by JDR Designs offered to make the bouquet & boutonniere, and oh boy did they turn out beautifully! Thank you So Much Blumz!

Then Changez Salon and Spa offered to do the hair and makeup for my brides for the photo shoot. They looked fabulous! Thank you Ashley at Changez for coming in on Sunday to make this happen for us, the ladies looked fantastic!

We got out the sparklers, set up the lights and camera in the backyard. Becky fit into the dress I had purchased (for another photoshoot later), Kim looked perfect, all the hairs were did, and all the makeup was perfect, the sun set and we were ready to go.

I just have to say, I couldn't have done this project without everyone's help. Not without Blumz and Changez, without Becky and Kim, and not without my my fabulous friends MaryMary and Darlene, not to mention my beautiful daughter Charlotte. This project is 100% a group effort. So, THANK YOU to each and every one that was involved in making this project so incredibly successful.

I have been very honored to have known Mark and Samantha for some time now. I first met them when their so very handsome boy Jacob was born. I was asked to come back when their beautiful daughter Emma was born.

I have been honored to be able to watch this wonderful family grow in number as well as in love. And I was lucky enough to be asked to be a part of their Day, the day they announced their Love to the world.

Congratulations to Mark and Samantha on becoming Mr. and Mrs! Your beautiful family is filled with love and you have your whole lives to enjoy it with each other.

I have to share this last little bit. Mark wrote a song for Samantha, and the PLAN was that he would surprise her with this song as their first dance. (I know, right?!!!) Well, life got in the way, and the song didn't get quite finished in time for the wedding. So close. Well, I knew that I wanted to photograph Mark playing for Samantha, and I knew that the Village Club had this BEAUTIFUL grand piano, so at the end of the evening, I asked Mark and Samantha to come upstairs, to take a couple of photos at the piano. When they got there, Mark sat down, and I asked him if he would play THE SONG for her. He did.. and you can see their love, you can see it.

Mystery Meet 2015 https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/5/3757 Every year, I host a photography scavenger hunt called The Mystery Meet through my Meetup.com group, Royal Oak Photography. This is always a really fun event. It is always challenging. And the photographers attending don't know what the theme is going to be until they arrive. My goal for this event is always to make it challenging, but doable, and to push the limits of each photographer's abilities, this year's event was no different.

Oh, and the best part? The winner of the Mystery Meet always wins something. This year the winner receives a $50 gift card to Camera Mart courtesty of Amy Claeys Photography and Camera Mart

In past years we have had themes like Find the Alphabet, Macro, and Colors. This year's theme was People, Places and Things at the Eastern Market. (See the details of this below.)

The Winner of this year's Mystery Meet is Amy Olsen, Set #1.

This photo series was creative and really jumped outside the box. Here is what some of the judges had to say:

"Unifying theme was very recognizable, and I thought they were thinking well outside of the box for interesting architecture."

"I like the interpretation of architecture - [it] didn't need to be man made"

"I loved the theme of spirals, from the spider web to the wheel to the tee shirt."

CONGRATULATIONS Amy!

Honorable Mention goes to the very talented Nancy Kleist, Set #7. Our group of judges loved her theme, as one judge put it, "I was impressed with the use of red and green, circles and veins, and the variety of subjects used to tie these together."

Well done Nancy!

Thank you to EVERYONE that participated in this year's Mystery Meet! I think it was a fun and challenging subject, and I think everyone did a great job!!

Also a very special THANK YOU to all of our judges this year for taking the time to look at the photos and pick out what you thought were the best series!

Here is the information I shared with each of the judges so that everyone judged the series in exactly the same way.

Thank you for agreeing to be a judge for this year’s Mystery Meet.

Each person was asked to take a picture of the following at Detroit’s Eastern Market

 • An interesting person
 • An interesting bit of architecture
 • Something for sale

They were also asked to make sure that their photos were a series – or to be clearer, that they had to relate to each other in some way. I gave them the example that when they were done, their three photos could be framed in one frame, and would make sense. Maybe it was color that held them together, or shape, or tone.. it was up to the photographer. I gave the photographers a LOT of creative room for this one, and I did it on purpose.

Knowing all of the above, please choose the series you believe that most embodies the above direction. To keep everything confidential – please send me your choice at amy.claeys@gmail.com. To see each set bigger, please just click on the picture. It’ll open a new window and you’ll be able to enlarge the set to it’s original size for more detail.

Again – THANK YOU!!

Eva and Joe https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2015/5/3749 I received a message from my friend Darlene that she had recommended me to a friend of hers who was looking for a new wedding photographer. I know it’s cliche, but there is no greater compliment, than to be recomended! THANK YOU DARLENE <3. So Darlene sends her friend Eva to my Facebook page, and Eva takes a look and not only like what she finds there, but she also recognizes my recent Senior, Travis, as well as images from Carter and Andrea‘s engagement and wedding photos. Why? Because it’s a small world after all! I met with Eva and Joe, and after talking to them, REALLY wanted to be the photographer they picked. Not for the booking (though, I can’t lie, that’s always nice) but because their wedding was going to be ridiculously fabulous.

After they booked, we decided to shoot their engagement photos on Belle Ise. Unfortunately Belle Isle is all Grand Prix’d up, so we decided that Stoney Creek would be the better option. Stoney is also where their wedding and reception is, so we opted to kind of follow the path of their wedding day in their engagement photos. I think they turned out simply magnificent, and I will say again I can’t WAIT to shoot this wedding!

Congratulations Eva and Joe! I had an absolute blast with you photographing you both on Saturday!

I spent Saturday evening with the very handsome Travis, Class of 2015. We had an adventure for sure. Russell Industrial Center, The Michigan Central Station and Belle Isle, with nearly a small trip to Canada (There IS an exit back to the US.. despite the sign..), and finally a trip over to the beautiful Belle Isle.

Congratulations to Travis, Class of 2015!!

Really BIG, really GREAT news! https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2014/9/3539 I started this blog in 2010. That’s when my very good friends Leesa and Keith had the faith in me – and untried photographer – to pick me to photograph their amazing waterfront wedding.

(Pic from Leesa’s wedding)

It’s been 4 years, and many weddings, portraits, workshops and photo events later, and let me just tell you.. it’s been a wild ride! I’ve done all this while also taking care of my family, and working full time.

(pic of multiple pics)

Well, it is with a great deal of happiness that I announce that I have quit my job as of today, and have officially become a full time photographer.

This year for the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk, we will be hitting the People Mover to tour Detroit. This year, however, we’ll be doing it from late evening, and finishing up in Greektown as the sun sets. There are some pretty great lights in Greektown, so this ought to be pretty great.

The Details:

We will meet at 6pm in the lobby of the Greektown Casino HOTEL (not the casino, but the Hotel). You should park in the Greektown Casino parking garage (located just off I-375 at the

Gary and Courtney https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2013/10/3355-1 A couple of years ago, my friend Gary says to me “so, can I bring a date to your birthday dinner??”

Of course I was a little nervous, since you know.. I didn’t know Gary was dating someone and A. I didn’t want him to bring a first date to my dinner and B. I was afraid we wouldn’t like her and then we wouldn’t get to see Gary anymore; you know, because we didn’t like her. haha.

So I asked him “Is it a first date?” he replied that it was in fact a third date. I replied cautiously that it was ok to bring her.

But guess what. SHE IS AMAZING. I loved Courtney from the very first time I met her.

To which I say, WELL DONE GARY!

Then, when he proposed to her, she said to me, “we want you to COME to the wedding, but we also want you to SHOOT the wedding.. we don’t know what to do!” To which I replied….”Why can’t I do both?!”

Which is the long way of saying, I’m SO glad that Gary and Courtney got married. They are a FABULOUS match, and I hope they have at least 100 years of happiness together. And 14 children. 100 years and 14 children. That’s right.

Congratulations Gary and Courtney!

When she met Roy, I couldn’t have been happier for her, and when she asked me to photograph her wedding, I couldn’t have been more honored.

Here are a few photos from their engagement shoot from over the weekend.

Then, when I invited him to come to my birthday dinner and he asked me if he could bring a girl with him, I of course said yes. And like any really good friend, I REALLY hoped that I liked this girl. Not only did I like her, I positively adored her immediately. I am incredibly honored to have been asked to be a part of their wedding.

Here are some super cute and fun photos from their very, very fun engagement shoot.

It is my absolute pleasure to be invited back into his life more than 20 years later to see how much he’s done with his life, and to see the family he has built with his most amazing wife Tera.

For what it’s worth, that makes her MY sister. She told me that she is starting a new life, and a new career, so I did what any sister would do; I offered to take a new headshot for her to help her on her way.

Oh. You may not believe it, but Kitty became a grandmother 2 days ago. Congrats Kit!

I am pleased to announce that I will be hosting a Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk this year. We are going to tour Detroit via the People Mover, and it’s going to be a BLAST.

Even better, I posted this event to my Royal Oak Photography Facebook Page, and this 50 spot event filled up in just about 4.5 hours!! That is amazing!! I am so incredibly humbled by the speed with which everyone signed up!

There is currently a waiting list, and if you want on it head over there now to sign up.

I’m so excited, this will be the biggest photowalk I’ve hosted to date!

Vacation! https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2012/5/2507-1 I haven’t had an honest to goodness vacation, you know, one of those where you are gone for a least 5 days, and maybe even get on a plane and then forget about EVERYTHING at home, yeah that kind, since I went on my honeymoon in 1999. So, taking the whole family on a 9 day vacation to Florida and on a 5 day cruise to the Caribbean was kind of a big deal in our house.

I thought “should I or shouldn’t I” share these photos here, and landed on “I should”. Please keep in mind that these were all taken with “snapshot” in mind, and that many of them were taken on my leetle point and shoot. Some – some weren’t even taken by me, but by the “photographers” at the events (like the dolphin swim).

Here are a few pages from the photo album I made to commemorate our trip. I hope you enjoy your little peak into our family vacation!

All the kids in our group on the trip. This is outside the entry to the ship – what a cute bunch, eh?

These are my kiddos in the “SPLASH ZONE” of the Oceanaria show on the Allure of the Seas. Front. Row. Baby!

This is as the boat was docking in the Bahamas. That is Paradise Island in the background. The ship actually docked against the left side of the dock you see there. It is really amazing how much mobility they have over a boat the size of the Allure of the Seas!

That is the Disney Dream on the left and the Allure of the Seas on the right. The Dream is NOT a small ship, but the Allure is just ENORMOUS and you can really see that when they are sitting next to each other.

They day had just begun, and my kiddos were already tired of being in the picture. Little did they know, this was only the beginning! Mwhahaha

This is everyone that went in our group – This was on Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers, and we were trying to get a photo into the Free Press – I haven’t heard if they published it or not.

Here’s the whole group again, this time on Formal Night. Everyone looks so prettyyyyyy

Here’s Grandpa with all his grandchildren My family.. snorkeling

This is from the last night of our cruise, taken with a 10mm fisheye off the back of the ship. That starry light you see, that’s the moon. I know, right?!

He hardly cried at all while I was there. Needless to say, I got my Baby-Love on. If Jacob gets 15 comments – mom and dad get a special photographic gift from today’s shoot

Implied https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2012/1/2466 From babies to… yeah.

For my project this term for my independent study film class I’ve decided to do implied nudes. My goal is to come up with images that could hang in anyone’s living room, my grandma’s, your grandma’s.. anyone’s!

These images are film, I scanned the prints, and then edited further with Photoshop.

Getting Ready https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2012/1/2461-1 I have been super busy lately!! Mostly I have been spending time in the studio, taking film pictures-which is why I haven’t posted much. So sorry about that! But, I will be photographing one month old Jacob tomorrow, and in preparation of that shoot, I stopped by my friend Claudia’s home to pick up some of her fabulous, super soft, highly fabulous hats to take with me. You should check out her Etsy shop!

Here are just SOME of the pictures of the handmade beauties I’ll be bringing tomorrow..I’m saving the BEST for later though.. By the way.. these were taken with my iphone, so the quality isn’t amazing.. but you can see how amazing it’s GOING to be!

Visual Proof https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2012/1/2455-1 So you ask me, “what have you been doing for the last two years, Amy?” And, I hope you are unsurprised when I answer with a photo. This is what I have been doing with my time. Here is a visual example of how much has changed in my abilities in the last couple of years. It is quite heartening to see this!

With special thanks to Mr. Karl Crafton for the use of the Stiff Competition logo he designed!

A walk with the Whites https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/12/2421-1

Very recently, I spent an afternoon with the White’s. I was a little nervous going into this shoot because, I would be shooting not one, but two 2 1/2 year olds. As anyone who’s ever been around a two and a half year old knows, keeping up with one can be a challenge – and there would be two!

My fears were completely unfounded, because not only did the day turn into a beautiful (relatively speaking) warm afternoon, the twins were friendly, fun to be around and even were eager to please that crazy photographer lady by doing what she asked of them (I’m sure it was my winning personality, and not the gummy bribes… haha)

I also put together a custom book for the family. This book is a custom designed coffee table book

I put the “spreads” together for the sake of ease in seeing it “like” a book. (In other words, the seam doesn’t always match up, but that part of page is the bound part, and will not be something the reader would see because it is the bound part of the book)

Studio Workshop with Royal Oak Photography Group https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/11/2393 I absolutely love everything about the Royal Oak Photography group. This group has brought me so far as a photographer, and even farther as a person. This weekend we had a studio worksop, hosted by the Photo Studio Group in Ann Arbor. Ben, Chris and Joshua were kind enough to spend a few hours with my ROP members, showing them several different lighting setups, and then giving them all time to shoot them. Very very fun day!

Also – this was lit using the inverse square law of light. To find out more about this really neat lighting style, please go to Ben’s blog: http://www.photostudiogroup.com/blog/archive/photo02.html

There was my son, a person that I had made, was helping around the house, without being asked! I have done my job as a parent. I think I quite literally patted myself on my own back. Yeah, that lasted as long as it took to realize he just wanted a pile of leaves to jump into. (haha)

Safe for Tash https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/10/2362-1 Many years ago, I belonged to an internet based community called wotmania. It was all about these books called Wheel of Time by Robert Jordon. At least it always started that way. People tended to come for the books, and stay for the community. Anyway, I met one fabulous soul in particular at wotmania, and her name was Tashy, though “in real life” she tends to go by Teresa.

Teresa is a wonderful woman who always tells me the truth, even when it isn’t flattering. She also has this keen ability to see all sides of a situation before making a judgment about it – even when she is the one hurt by a situation. She is a tremendous woman who not only sees the good in things, she FINDS the good in things and in people.

So when asked me for a picture with a little saying on it, how could I ever say no to her. The model in the photo is Lindsay – and the studio was Lesa Photo-graphy’s studio, and the day was amazing.

So Tashy, this is for you.

Why I can’t work for free https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/10/2286-1 I know that, in the past, I have done work “for credit”, or to build my portfolio (for minimal cost to the client), or just shared photos with people for no other reason than they liked my work, and asked for a copy. I have also recently been asked on several occasions for free pictures. I have struggled with this, because I WANT to share, but as photography becomes less a hobby and more an income source for me, and as I sink more and more money into this – well that’s just not an option anymore. I found this article, and honestly, it really sums it all up neatly, and understandably.

Why I can’t work for free https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/10/2286 I know that, in the past, I have done work “for credit”, or to build my portfolio (for minimal cost to the client), or just shared photos with people for no other reason than they liked my work, and asked for a copy. Reasons Why Professional Photographers Cannot Work for Free

Dear potential photo buyer,

If you have been directed to this page, it is likely that you have requested the use of an image or images for free or minimal compensation.

As professional photographers, we receive requests for free images on a regular basis. In a perfect world, each of us would love to be able to respond in a positive manner and assist, especially with projects or efforts related to areas such as education, social issues, and conservation of natural resources. It is fair to say that in many cases, we wish we had the time and resources to do more to assist than just send photographs.

Unfortunately, such are the practicalities of life that we are often unable to respond, or that when we do, our replies are brief and do not convey an adequate sense of the reasons underlying our response.

Circumstances vary for each situation, but we have found that there are a number of recurring themes, which we have set out below with the objective of communicating more clearly with you, and hopefully avoiding misunderstandings or unintentionally engendering ill will.

Please take the following points in the constructive manner in which they are intended. We certainly hope that after you have had a chance to read this, we will be able to talk again and establish a mutually beneficial working relationship.

Photographs Are Our Livelihood
Creating compelling images is the way we make our living. If we give away our images for free, or spend too much time responding to requests for free images, we cannot make a living.

We Do Support Worthy Causes With Images
Most of us do contribute photographs, sometimes more, to support certain causes. In many cases, we may have participated directly in projects that we support with images, or we may have a pre-existing personal relationship with key people involved with the efforts concerned. In other words, each of us can and does provide images without compensation on a selective basis.

We Have Time Constraints
Making a leap from such selective support to responding positively to every request we get for free photographs, however, is impractical, if for no other reason than the substantial amount of time required to respond to requests, exchange correspondence, prepare and send files, and then follow-up to find out how our images were used and what objectives, if any, were achieved. It takes a lot of time to respond to requests, and time is always in short supply.

Pleas of “We Have No Money” Are Often Difficult to Fathom
The primary rationale provided in nearly all requests for free photographs is budgetary constraint, meaning that the requestor pleads a lack of funds.

Such requests frequently originate from organisations with a lot of cash on hand, whether they be publicly listed companies, government or quasi-government agencies, or even NGOs. Often, it is a simple matter of taking a look at a public filing or other similar disclosure document to see that the entity concerned has access to significant funding, certainly more than enough to pay photographers a reasonable fee should they choose to do so.

To make matters worse, it is apparent that all too often, of all the parties involved in a project or particular effort, photographers are the only ones being asked to work for free. Everyone else gets paid.

Given considerations like this, you can perhaps understand why we frequently feel slighted when we are told that: “We have no money.” Such claims can come across as a cynical ploy intended to take advantage of gullible individuals.

We Have Real Budget Constraints
With some exceptions, photography is not a highly remunerative profession. We have chosen this path in large part due to the passion we have for visual communication, visual art, and the subject matters in which we specialise.

The substantial increase in photographs available via the internet in recent years, coupled with reduced budgets of many photo buyers, means that our already meager incomes have come under additional strain.

Moreover, being a professional photographer involves significant monetary investment.

Our profession is by nature equipment-intensive. We need to buy cameras, lenses, computers, software, storage devices, and more on a regular basis. Things break and need to be repaired. We need back-ups of all our data, as one ill-placed cup of coffee could literally erase years of work. For all of us, investment in essential hardware and software entails thousands of dollars a year, as we need to stay current with new technology and best practices.

In addition, travel is a big part of many of our businesses. We must spend a lot of money on transportation, lodging and other travel-related costs.

And of course, perhaps most importantly, there is a substantial sum associated with the time and experience we have invested to become proficient at what we do, as well as the personal risks we often take. Taking snapshots may only involve pressing the camera shutter release, but creating images requires skill, experience and judgement.

So the bottom line is that although we certainly understand and can sympathise with budget constraints, from a practical point of view, we simply cannot afford to subsidise everyone who asks.

Getting “Credit” Doesn’t Mean Much
Part and parcel with requests for free images premised on budgetary constraints is often the promise of providing “credit” and “exposure”, in the form or a watermark, link, or perhaps even a specific mention, as a form of compensation in lieu of commercial remuneration.

There are two major problems with this.

First, getting credit isn’t compensation. We did, after all, create the images concerned, so credit is automatic. It is not something that we hope a third party will be kind enough to grant us.

Second, credit doesn’t pay bills. As we hopefully made clear above, we work hard to make the money required to reinvest in our photographic equipment and to cover related business expenses. On top of that, we need to make enough to pay for basic necessities like food, housing, transportation, etc.

In short, receiving credit for an image we created is a given, not compensation, and credit is not a substitute for payment.

“You Are The Only Photographer Being Unreasonable”
When we do have time to engage in correspondence with people and entities who request free photos, the dialogue sometimes degenerates into an agitated statement directed toward us, asserting in essence that all other photographers the person or entity has contacted are more than delighted to provide photos for free, and that somehow, we are “the only photographer being unreasonable”.

We know that is not true.

We also know that no reasonable and competent photographer would agree to unreasonable conditions. We do allow for the fact that some inexperienced photographers or people who happen to own cameras may indeed agree to work for free, but as the folk wisdom goes: “You get what you pay for.”

Please Follow-Up
One other experience we have in common is that when we do provide photographs for free, we often do not receive updates, feedback or any other form of follow-up letting us know how the event or project unfolded, what goals (if any) were achieved, and what good (if any) our photos did.

All too often, we don’t even get responses to emails we send to follow-up, until, of course, the next time that someone wants free photographs.

In instances where we do agree to work for free, please have the courtesy to follow-up and let us know how things went. A little consideration will go a long way in making us feel more inclined to take time to provide additional images in the future.

Wrap Up
We hope that the above points help elucidate why the relevant photographer listed below has sent you to this link. All of us are dedicated professionals, and we would be happy to work with you to move forward in a mutually beneficial manner.

CHARM FARM!!!!!!! https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/9/2266-1 So this needs a little bit of back story.

It is no secret that I love me some local music. The real story here is I loved me some local music before Rick B. I know, it hurts, but it’s true, and I’m all about the truth. So let’s go back, waaaay back. To the early to mid 90’s. I was hanging with my girl Karen, and was often found partying with Tariq and Ed at the Shelter on Saturday nights. And whenever Charm Farm played, whether it was at Industry, the Shelter, St. Andrews (or that one brewery… [something] Street brewery… ) We were THERE. Karen eventually moved on to other, newer things, so I introduced my new friends to the Charm Farm as well, so I continued to go see them live, and continued to LOVE them. I owned their CD’s, and I played them.

And then I lost my cds Well, I lost the one big one, boo. So I scoured the net for a copy, with no luck. I ended up tracking down Dennis White (lead singer), and emailed him asking him where I might find a copy to buy. He insted sent me a whole package of Charm Farm STUFF. Stickers, VINYL!!!, and my most favorite local band CD ever. THANK YOU DENNIS!!!!

Anyway, they ended up breaking up in the late/mid 90’s after almost making it

It is no secret that I love me some local music. The real story here is I loved me some local music before Rick B. I know, it hurts, but it’s true, and I’m all about the truth. So let’s go back, waaaay back. To the early to mid 90′s.

Anyway, they ended up breaking up in the late/mid 90′s after almost making it from what I understand.

And that was that. They were scattered around the globe, and the likelihood of another show ever happening was slim to none, with a side of “no effing way” thown in for good measure.

That didn’t stop me from loving them. As a matter of fact, just yesterday I shared a Charm Farm song with a friend.

So today, while I worked, I saw on Facebook that one of my friends from my photo group mentioned something about going to see the Charm Farm tonight at the DIY festival in Ferndale.

Of course I immediately texted her, and while I waited (like a minute) for her reply, I googled it. And I saw that in fact, the SAME Charm Farm, REUNITED!!!! was playing just a couple miles from my house. I threw an invite out for someone to come with, but last minute like that, no dice. But that’s ok.. it’s not like I’m afraid of doing things alone. I simply grabbed my camera and drove as fast as I could to Ferndale. (Ok.. not really “as fast as I could” but it does paint a nice picture, yes??) And got there early enough to see some girl band, and then AND THEN!!!! OMG CHARM FARM!!!!

I have to tell you, I danced like I was 15 years younger, and 100 lbs lighter. (needless to say, I’m hurting a little bit at the moment….) I haven’t danced like that in YEARS. SO MUCH FUN!!! And then.. at the end of their show, when I expected someone like Kid Rock to make an appearence (like in years gone by), instead ICP rolled in. So there I am, front row, for ICP. Kind of a nice cherry on the sundae if you ask me!!

What, too much talking, and more pictures?? If you say so!! THANK YOU SO MUCH Charm Farm!!! This was like a surprise birthday party for me (it’s not my birthday, but it was LIKE that). I’m so glad that you got past whatever you needed to get past, because you really ARE amazing. THANK YOUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lighter https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/9/2106 This is the story of how this

became this

A few months ago, I met a great guy named Ben. Ben runs a fabulous studio in Ann Arbor called Photo Studio Group. I finally got out to see his studio a couple months ago, and it is honestly fabulous. What IS PSG? Photo Studio Group is a community of serious photographers who are committed to growing their businesses.

And what does that mean??

It means – PSG is a community based studio where with an (extremely reasonable) membership fee, you have access to their studio, all the equipment and conference room space.

When Ben originally approached me, I was like “it sounds GREAT, but it’s in Ann Arbor. (that’s about an hour away from me). And I left it at that.

Then, I started seeing these promotions for Lighter 1.1. I looked cool, but I didn’t really GET it. It was all about an idea for a photo.. but what did that MEAN.

So of course, I called Ben.

He explained – the contest was about submitting an IDEA – send us a sketch of an idea for a really cool picture and if your IDEA gets picked, then you get to shoot it – in front of judges and then there will be an online vote to finish things up.

I thought about it… and it was a REALLY cool idea.. so at pretty much the last possible minute, I submitted my idea, and happily, I was chosen based on my super awesome sketch

and with the help of Jedi in training Mike Rice – we created this

So we are in the final stage of this – the voting. I’m doing OK, but I still need your help! If you would be so kind as to vote for me, I would be forever grateful!!

VOTE HERE

Now back to PSG for a minute: I’ve driven out to PSG several times now – and I have to say – totally worth the drive. Not only is the studio itself AMAZING (can you say 40 foot cyc wall), but what’s even better is – they don’t just show you to the studio and then walk away. Both Ben and Chris (the other owner) are right there to help you, to assist you.. whatever you need really. My point? If you don’t mind the drive – or you are anywhere near Ann Arbor and are looking for a super affordable and easy way to “have your own studio”.. you should REALLY check Photo Studio Group out.

So that’s my story.

Oh! Here’s the best part of all this.

I can make YOU a super sweet Jedi. And can make you a poster (or print) to hang in your house. How much would your son like this picture? How much would YOU (don’t lie… we all know you would love it!) For more information about how put yourself in this picture CONTACT ME today!!

Wait – you haven’t voted yet?

Pieces of Cheyenne https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/8/2092 I was lucky enough to be invited by the fabulous Kevin Nedd out for dinner on Monday with him and Lesa Photography for a night of photography discussion. Well, when you put three photographers together, it’s not long before the cameras come out! So we invited the simply gorgeous Cheyenne Scott out and then we got to play. The IDEA for this was Lesa’s so all the props go in that direction. However, I had a really fun time editing this and think it turned out simply fabulous.

I think one of the reasons I absolutely love this image is because I am nearly obsessed with making parts into a whole, (as if you didn’t notice that in my fine art photography). I really see this image as simply another part in the whole of my Pieces project.

Fine Art and Weddings https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/8/2080-1 When you get married, you want to be able to remember all the little details of the day. And while that includes the very posed images from the day – I believe that it’s the tiny pieces of the day, all put together that leave the longest and best memories for us to recall the day.

As a wedding photographer, I take that quite literally. And while I make sure we get the posed pictures from the day, I also take at least one roll, and usually two rolls of film at each wedding. I take that film and personally develop it, enlarge (print) it and then create for you fabulous works of art that not only tell a story about your day, but are timeless pieces of art that can grace your home for a lifetime.

Thank you as well to all of my friends that came out to support me. You guys were positively wonderful, and I can’t tell you enough how much it means to me to be supported by such amazing (that seems to be the word of the day!), creative, talented people.

The 2011 Roots in Detroit Photography Contest & Exhibition is specifically designed to recognize the exceptional talent of our local photographers and to celebrate our community through the art of photography.

The winning photographs from Thom Briggs, Ron Warren and first place winner Susan Barnes will be featured in large format prints along with the 8 honorable mention photographs. All eleven photographers have also been invited to showcase their outstanding talent by sharing their body of work.

Film Photographers Do It Better ~ and other fabulous bumper stickers.. https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/8/2027 Ok, maybe it’s not a bumper sticker, but it should be! One of the ways I like to distinguish myself from the crowd is by shooting film. At every wedding/event I shoot, I shoot at least one roll of film, and I try to get really creative and artsy with that film. I don’t have much of my film photography scanned, but I’ve given it a start.

The following image is 3 scanned in images, which were then arranged digitally in Photoshop. The background is also Photoshopped (obviously). This is from Rick and Anna’s wedding.

Here is another scanned film image, this one I took while shooting my show for Avatar Studios. (Which reminds me! I owe you all photos from that! Coming Soon!!) This actual image wasn’t in the show, because another piece featuring Halee Detroit in film was the centerpiece. But I absolutely LOVE this one too.

Now, I will say this. While these scanned images are pretty great, if you really want the full serving of fabulous, you’ll come out to the Roots in Detroit Photography Exhibition on Saturday the 13th where these images will be featured along several of my other composite photographs.

The event takes place at the Historic Winery in Farmington. (At Grand River and Orchard Lake), from 6 – 9 pm. There will be food, there will be fun, there will be fabulous photography from 11 different local Detroit photographers. I would LOVE to see you there!

Rick and Anna Got Married.. https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/7/2010 I’ve known Rick for a very long time. As a matter of fact, if you go back to the very first post in this blog, he’s probably mentioned more than once, and shown in more than one photo. He was, in fact, my very first “favorite subject” to photograph. There is even a calendar.. but that’s another story.

This story is about Anna and Rick. Anna and Rick met online, and spent weeks emailing back and forth before they finally met in person. Apparently, Anna shared some of the emails with her friends:

And apparently he didn’t find that out until the wedding..whoops!

Anna told me that when she found out that Rick was in “a band” (“a” band..) she replied that she was fine with that as long as it wasn’t country, because she didn’t like country…

Luckily she was able to look past that small detail. Also it’s lucky that Rick isn’t in “a” band, but in “many” bands. That might have been what saved the budding relationship (haha)

All kidding aside, and I say this as a friend, not as their photographer, Rick and Anna are probably one of the best suited couples I’ve met in a very, very long time. I absolutely love watching them, because they look at each other and the glow positively lights up the room. Their happiness is blinding in it’s brightness, and that is not something I can say very often.

Having said all that, I’ve created some custom album book pages to help tell the story of their day.

Congratulations Rick and Anna! May you have a lifetime of happiness together!

A boy and his toy https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/6/1981 I am taking a class right now at OCC Royal Oak, learning all about lighting (and it’s amazing). But what is even greater, is because of this class, I’ve been spending COPIOUS amounts of time in the studio. Last week was with my daughter, and this week it was my son’s turn. We didn’t get a ton of pictures, because we were trying some new, “fun” things (which weren’t perfected yet, so I will wait to post them here – but if you are my Facebook Friend, I did post it there). However, here is a fabulous picture of my boy and his toy.

Hey there, how’ve you been? https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/5/1710 I know it’s been WAY too long between posts lately, and I’m really sorry about that! I have been SUPER busy lately, too busy really, but I kinda like it that way! I have been getting ready for my Tattoo Show at Avatar studios in Ferndale, if you haven’t seen the info, it is as follows
June 17th
6-9 pm
Avatar Studios in Ferndale

For more details follow the link thru the picture

I’ve also just started my Studio Photography class under the most amazing Rob Kangas. Honestly boys and girls, this man is the best all around Teacher I have ever had the honor to be taught by. And in this class, as the name implies, it is spent for the most part in the studio, learning the ins and outs of that. Last week I had a super secret shoot (and it was super AWESOME if I do say so myself), and this week I was joined by Mr. Joel Bremer (who was posing for the Tattoo show – you could come on down, I bet you’ll love it!) and by Ms. Kimberly Rose, a very lovely, very fabulous model. Here is a sneak peak of Kim:

Again, the Tattoo Show is June 17th in Ferndale, and I REALLY hope you join me for opening night!

I really hope you come out and celebrate this inaugural event with me. I will only have my first show once!

Oh deer.. https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/4/1682 Today after rushing around all day at work, and rushing to pick up the kids from daycare (along with my daughter’s friend), in a frenzy to get home to make dinner, finish my project for school, help my son with his homework, and then somehow find the time to get to school in time for my critique, I pulled in the driveway to start this mad dash only to find not one, not two, (and so on and so forth) but seven (yes, 7) deer just beyond my backyard fence. And they didn’t run from us either, they were playing and lounging, and being cute in general. I have to say there is nothing like romping deer in your backyard to make you take a breath and (I’d say “smell the roses” but I think) watch the deer, (is better).

(Yes, by the way, I live just in front of a cemetery. At first I worried about zombies, but honestly, I couldn’t ask for better neighbors!)

Fun with wigs and dancing in the living room https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/3/1665 It’s true – with the right equipment and a little bit of know-how, you can do just about whatever you want, where-ever you want. I have had my backdrop set up in the living room for just over a day now, and let me just say, we’ve been having a blast!

We started out with the blue wig. An amazing, fantastic blue wig, that promised “high fashion”, and boy did it deliver!

And then today, since we had dance class anyway, we expanded dance “class” into dance “fun”!

And in a couple of days, there will be more photos added of the new tutu’s.. but with a baby for a model. So excited. Love my living room studio!!

Did I mention that the Emerald is my very favorite place to shoot live music? The lighting at this venue is extrordinary.. So. Here are my shots from this year’s Longneck Strangler show at the Emerald. I hope you enjoy them as much as I’ve enjoyed taking them.

A taste of Longneck Strangler https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2011/1/1571-1 I was delighted when Longneck Strangler asked me to shoot their yearly promo pictures for 2011.. no seriously, “delighted” is the exact word I would use in this situation! If you’ve read my first post on this blog, you know that I’ve been shooting this band.. pretty much since they’ve been a band. It’s where I would go to take out my camera, so for them to ask me to shoot them at this professional level is almost.. an arrival for me.

Thank you Ricky, Jeremy, Kevin and Rick for thinking of me, and having the faith in me to do this, and do it right. I hope you will be as pleased as I am with the outcome!!

I’m a very “wide angle” sort of girl, meaning I really like to see the whole picture. Sometimes this manifests itself in the joiners I make, but sometimes it shows as one big picture. That is the case in my favorite picture from last night. This is a the main strip in Greektown, Beaubien at Lafayette Blvd, Detroit MI

As I made my way down the street there was a firetruck parked, and it was just really cool.. so I played around a little with perspectives.

The firefighters came back, and were gracious enough to pose for me. The great thing about this photo is that this was a long exposure. And by long, I mean these guys sat still for EIGHT seconds. Don’t think that’s a long time, hold your breath for that long.

Three cheers for some of Detroit’s heros!! Thanks you guys!

Before we left we headed to the top of Greektown Casino’s parking garage, and took some night landscapes. The view was amazing!

And that is just some of what I saw this weekend.

Paparazzi https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/9/1287 Every day when I go to work, and when I come home, I pass my cousin’s newly purchased home on 12 Mile. And of course I always look. Why? Because he is almost ALWAYS doing something in his yard. and often his dad is even with him helping. He moved in a few months ago, and his yard is just about perfect. Flowers and plants everywhere, it’s gorgeous.

Well, today, I was driving home from a shoot, and as I passed I glanced, and lo and behold, there he was, and he was just starting out for his evening run. The sun was even fantastically positioned in the sky. So at the next street, I turned in, grabbed my camera, still warm from it’s last workout, and stood behind a tree and waited. It’s not that I was afraid he’d see me, but I just didn’t want him to see who I was until I got the shot. That’s just how I roll.

I’m bummed that there was all the traffic, but it was 12 mile, and I was shooting guerilla style, so what was I supposed to do!!

Hockney https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/9/1264 One of the styles of photography that has touched me since before I knew who started the movement or what it was called is the work inspired by David Hockney. You can see many of the images I’ve created in this style in my Art & Architecture gallery.

About a month ago, my photo group took a trip to Detroit to visit some amazing cathedrals. This was our first stop, St. Anne’s.

There are 14 individual images in this joiner. All in all, I’m very happy with how this turned out!

Here are some other images from that day’s tour:

Here is St. Anne’s, you know, w/out the joiner aspect to it.

The “Rose Window” at the back of St. Anne’s.

The Sweetest Heart of Mary. This was two separate images that I put together by hand (not as one of my instructors would say “with a push of a button”).

The Verve Pipe https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/9/1250 In 2009 my friend Robert Wax’s band was playing at the Magic Bag. Since I’ve known Rob longer than I care to admit, and he asked me to come shoot the event, I simply couldn’t say no!

Their band, Crashing Cairo was opening for the Verve Pipe, so of course I stayed for that show as well. And of course I took pictures – because that’s kind of what I do.

Well, last week, the Verve Pipe’s manager called me. At first I thought he was going to tell me to take the pics I have of the band off my site, and asked him if that was the case. He replied “Nooo.. I actually want to use some photos that you posted on the Verve Pipe’s website..”

How amazing is THAT by the way?

So based on what he asked for, here is what I sent out to them:

So yeah. Very exciting stuff, and I wanted to share. On a side note, it’s something else trying to remember to post HERE instead of just posting this to my Facebook page!

Happy Short Week everyone!

]]> amyclaeysphotography@gmail.com (Amy Claeys Photography) Rock https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/9/1250 Wed, 08 Sep 2010 08:40:21 GMT “Because you’re you” https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/9/1128 Once upon a time there was a band named Longneck Strangler.

They are an outlaw country band. They play very often at a bar called The House of Shamrocks – or as it’s more commonly known, “The Sham”. I go there often to see them. And one night a girl came out to The Sham to see Longneck with her friends, and as her friends were about to leave, a man walked in. And that girl, she knew. So she told her friends to go ahead, and she hung back and said hello to that man. And before you know it, they were inseparable.

After a while, again at The Sham, and again with the backdrop of Longneck Strangler playing, that man, Keith, asked that girl, Leesa to marry him. And she said “Yes!”. I would share the pictures of that night with you, but alas, I was not there. But I’m sure you can imagine what a sweet and fabulous moment it was.

Now, I also run a photography group, and we were planning a model shoot. Someone suggested that we shoot a “fake engagement” for our portfolios. So, I thought, “why shoot a fake engagement?!!” and I asked Leesa and Keith to come out for an engagement shoot. Of course they said yes.

A short while after the engagement shoot, Leesa pulled me aside, and told me she wanted me to shoot their wedding. I immediately said no, and suggested she find someone who has A. done this before and B. would make it though the day not only with “some pictures” but with “some amazing pictures” but she insisted, and said , ” but we want YOU becuase..well, because you’re You!”

Seriously, how could I say no to that?

So it was my honor, honestly my honor, to be Leesa and Keith’s wedding photographer.

The night before the wedding I came out, to see Longneck Strangler with Leesa and Keith and their families and of course, I brought my Nikon.

In this picture, I told everyone to smile, and Leesa was asking Keith why I wasn’t taking a picture of HER

And then we took the last picture of Leesa Lepore and Keith Elkins together, because at Midnight, Leesa went home (because the groom couldn’t see the bride on her wedding day!!) Then the boys did their thing

And the night before was very fun, and it was a very late night…

And of course the wedding pictures..

Here’s the closet Leesa and her mom hid in while the boys came in from the limo…

I can’t mention the wedding without also mentioning the band. Because this band has played such a large role in Keith and Leesa’s life so far, they met at a show, he proposed at a show, and of course, Longneck also played the wedding!

Mr. and Mrs. Keith Elkins dancing for the first time. Congratulations you two. I am so happy that I was a part of your Day. I am so honored that you had faith in me, faith that I could deliver to you the story of your day. I could not be happier for you both, and your joy with each other simply radiates from the images. I wish you a lifetime of Happy.

Presenting… AMY CLAEYS PHOTOGRAPHY https://www.amyclaeysphotography.com/blog/2010/8/868

Presenting…… Amy Claeys Photography

I have been working toward this day for several years, and I would like to share with you a little bit about how I got here.

In 2001 I was lucky enough to make a beautiful boy.

At the time I had a 35 mm point and shoot film camera. I was taking so many pictures of that beautiful boy, that my husband bought me my first digital camera, and Olympus C4040 zoom.

At the time, this was a high-end camera woo hoo lol. 4.1 megapixels baby!! And with this camera I not only shot thousands of photos of my son, I also started taking it with me when we went out to see some local bands. And while I got the camera because of the baby, it was with shooting bands that I really caught the passion for photography.

And as much as it might pain me to say it, the road to where I am now, and I mean the launch of the website, really starts with All Right Tokyo.

These two guys put up with me for a very long time haha. But in all that, it was still just fun. I didn’t actually fancy myself a “PHOTOGRAPHER”. That all changed in 2006, when I took this photo.

Now. Up to this point, I was like “this is fun, I like it, but really, I’m not THAT great”. And that was partially true. But, I liked how it made me feel when the camera was in my hand.. so since I had a teeny card on my old camera, and had a relatively new laptop, I brought the laptop with me to the show. The girls at the show made such a big deal about this picture, that I honestly started to believe that I might be able to be more than just “that girl with a camera”.

Then I found out that not one, but two different people from the show had my photos on their wall.

Really?

This tiny piece of knowledge catapulted me from “wouldn’t it be nice if..” to “Maybe I can do this!!”

So, the first thing I did when I got my taxes back was go out and buy a new camera.

NikonD40. 6.1 megapixals.

After this purchase I grew leaps and bounds as a photographer. I had bands ask me relatively often to photograph them, and was the even unofficial photographer of Crashing Cairo. I even created a logo, not a great one, but a logo, and started adding it to my photos. I was at the starting point of being legit, and it felt great. Aside from my kiddos who were still my #1 subjects, I mostly only shot bands.

2008 brought much of the same. Many bands, same camera.

Also in 2008 I created a calendar for my friends and family, and received so much positive feed back that I made more calendars. I made probably 5 different calendars in 2008: Butterflies, Longneck Strangler, Crashing Cairo, the infamous Rick calendar, and then when one of the band members complained that the calendar he got didn’t have enough of HIM in it, I made one that was all of him (and he shall remain nameless )

So much positive feedback that I did it again in 2009.

2009 also brought with it the idea of a Photo Walk. Again, thanks to Heather Hansma for this idea. It seems simple enough, but it had honestly never occurred to me. So at her suggestion, we went on an

“art walk” where she would sketch and I would shoot. What a great day this was!

The big change for me came in late 2009 when I started the Royal Oak Photography Group. I went to my group’s first meeting, and my camera was downright small in comparison to everyone else’s camera that came out for the shoot. And what a turn-out it was too. My first ROP meeting we met in January of 2009 at the Detroit Zoo butterfly house, and as it happened, it was on the day of the biggest winter storm of the season. But even given that, 8 photographers showed up. It was fabulous.

In the almost 2 years since that cold January day, my group has grown to over 400 members, we have gone on nearly 50 outings and even published a book. This was honestly one of the best decisions I’ve made ever in my life. What was even greater, I saw my images get better with each meet. So much so that I thought about starting my own Photography business. And that’s where website comes in.

For the last year and a half, I have been building up he materials, equipment and images to have all the best tools as a professional photographer. It started with the purchase of my Nikon D90 in April of 2009 as well as several high end lenses.

I also took some time and attended multiple photography classes at a local college. I studied digital manipulation as well as photography technique and classic photography. I studied film photography under the amazing Rob Kangas. I also worked closely with the fabulous illustrator Heather Hansma to create a fantastic logo. Finally, I started adding studio equipment and a new iMac along with the newest and best photo software. All to have the means to create not just good photography, but GREAT photography. You see, I could have bought the camera and then declared myself a “Professional” like so many new photographers do, but frankly, I think you deserve more than that.

I have uploaded many of my favorite photos from the couple of years to my galleries, and I invite you to take a look. You are also welcome to take a look at my Flickr for even more images.

And finally, I’d like to take a moment to thank all of the fabulous families that trusted me to photograph their families in the last year or so. I will post a tribute (in blog form) to all of you soon, I promise! From the bottom of my heart, thank you! Without you this would not have been possible!

And with that ladies and gentleman, boys and girls….
